What is Functional Medicine?

People are living longer due the advances and miracles of modern western medicine, but there isn’t an emphasis in modern medicine on the concept of living well. In the aftermath of the pandemic, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of people experiencing complex and chronic physical and mental health issues and chronic pain. Common things I am seeing in my practice are marked increase in depression, anxiety, brain fog, severe fatigue, dramatic and sudden weight gain, diabetes, heart disease, severe headaches, migraines, persistent gas, bloating, acid reflux and hormonal imbalances. I’ve also seen an increase in autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis, and Crohn’s disease. Oftentimes on traditional western medicine, these diagnoses are where the healing stops: the most common treatment is to turn off the immune system. People are living longer due the advances and miracles of modern western medicine, but there isn’t an emphasis in modern medicine on the concept of living well. In the aftermath of the pandemic, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of people experiencing complex and chronic physical and mental health issues and chronic pain.

Common things we’re seeing in my practice are a marked increase in depression, anxiety, brain fog, severe fatigue, dramatic and sudden weight gain, diabetes, heart disease, severe headaches, migraines, persistent gas, bloating, acid reflux and hormonal imbalances. We’ve also seen an increase in autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis, and Crohn’s disease.

Oftentimes in traditional western medicine, these diagnoses are where the healing stops: the most common treatment is to turn off the immune system.

In functional medicine, we want to understand what the immune system is reacting to and why the persistent chronic symptoms are occurring.

The mainstream practice of western medicine is focused more on what we call “triage medicine” – treating the immediate problem such as trauma, acute care and emergency medicine. Often the treatment methods are surgery or drugs, with little emphasis on looking at why and how these acute health conditions evolved in the first place.

There is a root to these chronic health issues; we just need the right tools and the right lens to see and tend to the root. Functional medicine looks deeper into seeing why and how these symptoms began, treats the root (cause or causes) and the branches (symptoms), and then focuses on preventing them from coming back.

The traditional western medical approach lacks the ability to treat and address complex and chronic diseases.

There are a myriad of factors contributing to chronic inflammation, debilitating fatigue, chronic pain, chronic digestive issues, anxiety, depression, chronic insomnia, hormonal imbalances during like PMS, painful periods, and spikes in inflammation and weight gain during perimenopause, menopause and andropause.

Additionally, there is little to no emphasis on genetics, environmental toxins, and food quality and how those factors influence our health.

When it comes to your health, environment, stress, food and water quality matter.

Your emotions matter. You matter.

Everything is connected. We’re not separate parts (neurology, gastroenterology, psychiatry, dermatology). Functional physicians look at your entire system as a whole and treat all of you (body, mind and emotions).

Functional medical physicians focus on patient-centered care.

Everyone deserves to have radiant energy, deep rest and feel at peace and free within their bodies. Functional medical physicians strive to help people thrive and live long and live well. Health is not just the absence of disease; it’s the ability to live a life feeling vital, strong, and full of abundant energy in all aspects of your life (health, career, relationships, life purpose).

Everyone has their unique story of how their health became imbalanced. With functional medicine, we practice deep listening and spend abundant time with you to help find your unique and customized treatment plan to getting you to radiant health.

We take into account your internal (mind, body, spirit) environment and your external environment (physical and social environment) into optimizing your unique treatment plan for optimal health.

Functional medicine doctors like myself are health detectives.

We use lab tests based on blood, stool, saliva, urine, and genetic testing to leave no stone unturned to getting to the roots of inflammation, disease, and pain.

Instead of waiting to intervene until your lab values are out of range (for example, wait and see until you have diabetes to treat blood sugar, or wait until you have hypothyroidism to treat your thyroid ), we focus on seeing trends in your lab work are suboptimal and support those aspects of your health with nutritional and lifestyle medicine, thus preventing diabetes and hypothyroidism from occurring.

We support your entire system with natural remedies to help bring your body back into balance and optimize your blood chemistry. Using this method of optimizing lab values leads to the prevention of the development of many diseases later in life – this is what we call longevity medicine.

Our goal as physician and partner in your healthcare is for you to feel amazing now and the rest of your life – maximizing your healthspan (the ability to live long and live well).

We can’t wait to meet you and help you achieve inner and outer radiance.
